The president familiarized himself with the mapping process at the Land and Spatial Development Board – how spatial data collected by aircraft is used to create Estonia's base map, orthophotos, 3D models, and many other maps.
"We are very pleased that the president chose to visit the Land and Spatial Development Board as part of his Curiosity Day. Accurate maps are based on high-quality data, and Estonia's spatial data is the best in Europe. Approximately 80% of all data is related to space and location, and this data is an important basis for decision-making. Map applications based on accurate measurements are used in planning, crisis management, environmental monitoring, digital services, and many other areas. Just as important as high-quality spatial data is the ability to use it wisely. This allows us to make the best decisions that shape Estonia today and tomorrow," said Kati Tamtik, Director General of the Land and Spatial Development Board.
The President also got to try his hand at it – using stereo glasses, he added a small improvement to the map of Estonia: the bridge that was missing from Kadriorg Palace Park.
During the visit, the museum was also visited and the historical map application was introduced, which visually shows how Estonia has changed over the years. In addition, satellite data from the ESTHub data center was shown and it was explained how it can be used to monitor changes in forests and land surface in real time, if necessary.
The Land and Spatial Development Board invites interested parties to visit at other times as well, to learn how the map of Estonia is created, about different map applications, and how to use them.
